Nakamura Residence

Nakamura Residence

Detailed Information

Nakamura House, located in Kitanakagusuku Village, Okinawa, is a historical private residence designated as a National Important Cultural Property, said to have been built in the mid-18th century. It is a valuable remaining structure that retains all the characteristics of pre-war Okinawan residential architecture, with a traditional layout surrounded by Fukugi trees and stone walls, featuring a red tiled roof and a hipped roof. Inside, you can experience the unique culture of the time, including a large Buddhist altar and the "Hinukan" (fire god), and learn about the lifestyle of a wealthy farming family from that era. It miraculously survived the Battle of Okinawa during World War II and was designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 1972. Visits are by reservation only, and it is a popular spot for learning about history and culture.
