Shureimon Gate

Detailed Information
Shureimon Gate, the second main gate of Shuri Castle in Naha City, Okinawa, is a symbolic structure of the Ryukyu Kingdom, built approximately 500 years ago. The plaque at its center, inscribed with "Shurei no Kuni," means "The Land of Propriety" and represents the importance of etiquette in Ryukyuan culture. Featuring a Chinese-style paifang architecture, it is characterized by its beautiful red tiled roof and elegant design. Though it was once destroyed in the 1945 Battle of Okinawa, it was restored in 1958. Conveniently located about a 30-minute drive from Naha Airport and close to Kokusai-dori Street, it is a classic sightseeing spot that attracts many tourists. It is also the famous gate featured on the design of the 2,000 yen bill issued in 2000.
